Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

An Immersive And Massive World To Explore

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains an impressive achievement by today’s standards. Inspired by films such as Boyz in the Hood, Menace to Society, and Casino, the open world of San Andreas serves as an ideal backdrop to pay tribute to these iconic movies. San Andreas isn’t just one open-world city, but three: Los Santos, Las Venturas, and San Fierro. Moreover, it features countryside, mountainous areas, and desert landscapes. When it comes to open worlds, the GTA developers, Rockstar Games, set the bar, and San Andreas is no different. Even modern-day titles struggle to match the game’s level of immersion, character customization, and variety of activities like gang warfare, gambling, and more.

Rogue Galaxy

A Stunning Cell-Shaded Sci-Fi JRPG

Rogue Galaxy is an impressive JRPG developed by Level-5, the same team that created Dragon Quest 8, another remarkable JRPG for the PS2. This Star Wars-inspired JRPG is brimming with imagination and a terrific story. It features a colorful cel-shaded art style, excellent character designs, seamless transitions between its stunning environments, and real-time combat, making it a spectacular achievement on the PS2. The level of exploration seen in Rogue Galaxy was rare in the JRPG genre at the time, with characters who could jump onto platforms and even swim in the water. In addition to its excellent visuals, Rogue Galaxy features quality voice work and an epic soundtrack.

God Of War 2

A Cinematic Action Epic Rivaling PS3 Titles

The first God of War already set a new bar for action games with its visceral combat and epic boss battles. God of War 2 enhanced and built upon everything that made the original game great, establishing itself as one of the most impressive titles on the PS2. While many developers had already moved on to the next console generation, this title arguably surpassed some early PS3 games in terms of cinematic scope, animation, and combat. The game pushed the PS2 hardware to its limits with its speed, visuals, lighting, and incredible score and sound effects. There are more boss battles, larger environments, and a silky-smooth framerate that makes combat responsive and impactful.

Final Fantasy 12

A Spectacular Epic With Outstanding Visuals And A Seamless World

For many fans, Final Fantasy 12 was the last great Final Fantasy game. While it had its flaws, it’s a testament to the game’s incredible design, where very little has changed in the core mechanics and graphics of a game like Final Fantasy 12 in its modern remasters. The character designs and environments remain among the best in the Final Fantasy series.

Final Fantasy is a franchise known for its fantastical settings and lovable characters. These are the best characters across the FF franchise.

Character animations in and out of combat were fantastic, and the detailed architecture of the cities and towns effectively brought the world of Ivalice to life. Final Fantasy 12 is a vast game with expansive maps that don’t feel as linear as previous (or future) titles. Exploring between towns and the terrific Gambit battle system still feel as groundbreaking now as they did in 2007.

Black

A Sophisticated FPS That Looked Next Gen

Black

Released

February 28, 2006

Developed by Criterion Games, the same team that created the Burnout series and, more recently, the Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront games, Black utilized the same engine to create the massive, destructible environments in arguably the most visually impressive FPS on the PS2. Black was intended to play like a Hollywood action film, where players could shoot through walls and glass and create massive explosions. Despite the demanding effects, it offered a surprisingly smooth experience with highly detailed environments, realistic-looking guns, and satisfying sound effects. Some of the original developers created the spiritual sequel, Bodycount, on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but it wasn’t as groundbreaking as the original.

Shadow Of The Colossus

A Technical Milestone And A Visual Epic

Few games on the PS2 could match the scope and feeling of battling Godzilla-sized creatures like those in Shadow of the Colossus. Fighting the gigantic Colossi combines puzzle-solving with action-adventure mechanics as players explore a strange, vast, and open landscape. This feeling wouldn’t have been achievable if it weren’t for the combination of a tremendous art style and technical achievements that didn’t seem possible on the PS2. Shadow of the Colossus used advanced physics and dynamic fur rendering, giving the climbing mechanics a sense of realism and desperation. The minimalistic approach to storytelling, the unique atmosphere, and the sense of isolation give the game a similar feel to Elden Ring despite only featuring battles with the Colossi.
